The ancient Greeks, near the city of Magnesia, knew about strange and rare earth stone with the power to attract Iron. What started in the year 1868 as a method of detecting defects in cannon barrels and other ferromagnetic components by magnetizing them and passing a magnetic compass over them has become an extensively used NDE Method in defence sector. Now MPT is used in all industrial sectors nuclear, aerospace, oil and gas, railways, automotive, petrochemical, steel structures, power generation to examine a variety of welds and components. Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) is very popular and fastest method of NDT for detection of surface and sub surface discontinuities in the Ferromagnetic Materials which can be easily magnetized compare to Liquid Penetrant Testing. Magnetic particle testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting discontinuities that are primarily linear and located at or near the surface of ferromagnetic components and structures. The principle of the method is that, the ferromagnetic material is magnetized using Electromagnetic/Permanent Yoke or Prod or other means, and applying ferromagnetic particles (the examinations medium) on the surface during examination. Surface and Sub surface discontinuities that are to the magnetic flux line will produce a Magnetic leakage field that will attract magnetic Dry or Wet particles and forms a visible indication. The curriculum covers all aspects of magnetic particle testing such as, Magnetic Principles & Theory, Flux Leakage, Magnetic Fields, fundamentals of Alternating Current & Direct Current, direct & indirect magnetization, fluorescent & dry powder applications, various techniques etc. Only those metals classified as ferromagnetic can be effectively inspected by MPT.
